Stavenow Castle is surrounded by vast forests and many rivers, in an area of countryside so quiet that it's officially uninhabited! This lack of people allows wildlife (animals and plants) to flourish in a way that you won't find in densely populated countries like the UK.
The forests are full of deer, wild boar and even wild sheep! The rivers are teeming with fish and you're welcome to fish almost anywhere (you can buy a licence for about £6). You can walk or cycle for hours without meeting a soul, or the local forester will drive you round his forest in a pony and trap. The River Löcknitz (a couple of hundred yards from the castle) is clean and delightful for swimming from May until October.
We'll be happy to lend you detailed local maps, and can recommend different outings for both cyclists and walkers. We also have calendars of local cultural events and details of museums, castles etc.
Berlin and Hamburg are both about two hours' drive (there's also a regular, punctual, train service), and perfect for day trips - Berlin, in particular, is extremely interesting to visit as it has emerged from years of isolation to become Germany's capital once again.
Of course, if all this sounds too energetic, you can just sit in the sun (or in front of the fire) and read - we have an extensive library, with some English books, too. And a big pool table to enjoy in the evening.
